Saskatchewan Parks - Pike Lake

NOTICE: Work will start on the campground electrification project at Pike Lake Provincial Park on August 18, 2008 in the southeast corner of the campground (sites #143-#210).  Campers in those sites need to relocate no later than August 17, 2008.

Recreation and relaxation are what Pike Lake is all about.  In addition to the leisure pool there’s a baseball diamond, four playgrounds, tennis courts, a nine-hole sand green golf course, an 18-hole mini golf facility, sand volleyball courts, horseshoe pits and a second beach north of the main one.  Rent a paddleboat or canoe at the main beach or launch your small boat near the golf course – note the maximum motor size allowed on the lake is 10 hp.

Pike Lake is a shallow body of water that’s called an “oxbow” – it’s a loop of the South Saskatchewan River that became cut off from the main channel.  A barrier-free trail that starts at the main beach and runs southward to the creek that feeds the lake includes observation decks that provide a good view of the aquatic life and waterfowl in the vicinity.  A 1.5-km nature trail that begins at the interpretive centre, meanwhile, provides a fine opportunity to experience the surprisingly diverse ecosystems contained within this small park.

Water Recreation

Pike Lake Provincial Park

With both a pool and a small lake, Pike Lake is a great place to stay cool.

Swimming/Main Beach:  Bring out the sun screen and the bathing suits.  The main beach is located by the main parking lot.  Parents are asked to assume responsibility for their children’s safety at all times.  Swim only in the marked swimming area.  Lifeguard supervision is available only at the pool.

Leisure Pool:  A waterslide that is designed for all - not too fast so as to scare first timers, yet fast enough for the “experienced” ones to slide again and again and again; a uniquely shaped pool with zero to 1.5 m (5ft.) depth.  There is a separate splash-down pool for the waterslide, so swimmers and sliders do not interfere with each other.  The swimming pool is wheelchair accessible.  The complex is open daily from early June to Labour Day.  Public swim times and fees are posted on the park bulletin boards.

Boat Launch:  The boat launch, south of the golf course, gives access to the lake.  Motor size is limited to maximum of 10 hp.  Paddle boats and canoes can be rented just west of the main beach from a private operator.  For Paddle boat rentals and rates call (306) 931-4994.

Fishing:  We are not famous for our fishing, but the thrill of the catch can be experienced here.  Ask our staff about the hot spots to fish.  A fishing license is required and can be purchased at the campground office or the administration office.

Mini-Golf

AT&P Mini Golf:  An 18-hole, miniature golf course is located on the east side of the main parking lot.  This facility is privately operated with separate admission fees.  For booking private rentals or for group rates, phone (306) 220-3282.

Hiking

Lakeside Promenade:  This barrier-free trail enables anyone to go for a stroll along the shore.  Observation decks take you out over the water for a close up look at aquatic life and/or waterfowl.  This trail begins at the beach and takes you to the mouth of the creek that feeds the lake.

Gift of Green Nature Trail:  The nature trail starts at the interpretive centre located beside the campground office.  The nature trail follows a 1.5 km loop and winds through an aspen woodland, over shortgrass prairie and across sand dunes.  Bicycles cannot be used on the trail.
